Army Reserve Celebrates 100 Years of Service
The U.S. Army Reserve celebrated its 100th anniversary, on April 23, 2008.
This milestone not only acknowledges the United States' enduring need for such a force,
but also provides the opportunity to reflect on the transformation of the Army Reserve
throughout the years. What began as an organization consisting of 160 doctors has exploded
into a force of 195,000 Citizen Soldiers, 26,000 of which are currently on active-duty.

VFW National News:
VFW Pledges $1 Million for Vietnam Veterans Wall Project
VFW has a long history of supporting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and was,
in fact, the first major veterans' organization to contribute to building "The Wall"
itself. Recently, VFW vowed to maintain that support by pledging up to one million dollars
to help build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Center, a visitors and education facility being
built near the National Mall. VFW is the first veterans' organization to pledge financial
support to the Memorial Center.

Educating America's Newest Greatest Generation
On his first day as Senator, Jim Webb introduced the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational
Assistance Act, in an effort to bring 21st century realities to the Montgomery G.I. Bill
which currently accounts for only 50 percent of the average college costs. Now, 15 months later,
only half the Senate and one-fourth of the House have endorsed the legislation, leaving the VFW asking, why?

VFW Co-Hosts NASCAR Event for Soldiers
Kevin Harvick Incorporated (KHI) Headquarters was the destination spot for a VFW co-hosted
luncheon and tour, aimed at recognizing the contributions of United States military service members,
and heralding the racing union between VFW and KHI. "We're delighted to welcome this new opportunity
to showcase the vitality of the VFW. We believe NASCAR supporters will understand the importance of
our services," said Tommy Tradewell, Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, VFW.

VFW at Work:
Illinois Post Donates $157,600
Post 3854 in Skokie, Ill., has donated $157,600 in funds to assist hospitalized veterans
and soldiers serving in Iraq. Among the programs supported by Post 3854 are DMS Pharmaceuticals
Group, sponsors of the Fisher House of Illinois at the Hines VA, Medical Center (VAMC) near
Chicago, and The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown, N.Y., where therapeutic
dogs are trained and sent to troops overseas.
