VFW National News: VFW Salutes New VA Funding Bill
Capitol The newly passed funding bill for the Department of Veterans Affairs "puts veterans first, which will help ensure the world-class VA healthcare system continues to be accessible and responsive to the needs of those veterans with physical and mental disabilities" says VFW National Commander-in-Chief George Lisicki. The bill adds $3.7 billion to the $3.4 billion in discretionary funding the administration had proposed earlier this year.

VFW Responds to The Washington Post
Lisicki's Letter VFW National Commander-in-Chief George Lisicki recently responded to The Washington Post's article titled "Study Faults Charities for Veterans." In a letter to the editor, Lisicki points out that "it is an unfortunate error to paint all veterans' groups with the same broad brush." The study, conducted by charity watchdog The American Institute of Philanthropy, rated veteran charities based on money spent to raise funds, percentage they donate to their causes, top employee salaries and accounting records.

Vice President Cheney Praises Troops in VFW-Hosted Event
Vice President Cheney Vice President Dick Cheney recently visited the National World War I Memorial in Kansas City to speak before a largely military audience that included VFW members and active-duty troops of the Kansas City-area. During Cheney's speech, the recent military success was praised as Congress was scolded for failure to end the budget debate for the wartime defense-spending bill.

Korean War MIAs Identified
MIA Identified Air Force Col. Douglas H. Hatfield and Capt. Richard H. Simpson were among 11 crewmembers on board a B-29 that left Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, on April 12, 1951. Their mission to bomb targets in the area of Sinuiju, North Korea was disrupted by enemy MiG-15 fighters that attacked their B-29, resulting in a fatal crash. In 2000, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command led a team into Kujang County where the remains of Hatfield and Simpson were recovered.

Michael Angelo's Pizza 'Tosses' Operation Uplink $12,000
Operation Uplink Michael Shepherd, a father, husband, restaurant owner and four-time world pizza champion, was enjoying his freedom while watching TV with his children and the idea struck him. His goal was not only to raise financial support, but also to raise awareness in remembering the men and women fighting overseas, especially during the holidays. The outcome of his efforts was a dramatic show of support.
